Review: “Mythcreants” by Tricky Pixie

Well. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this album–but I mean that in the best possible way. The first track, “Chickies in the House” is a lovely little Celtic tune–with intermittent chicken clucks here and there throughout. This is not something you hear every day.

Naturally this made me curious as to what the second track, “Alligator in the House” would be like…but to my surprise, a lovely woman’s voice appears and spins the tale with accompaniment that smacks of the tango. This isn’t your everyday album it seems. And that’s just fine with me! Playing a musical game of “what’s around the corner” keeps things interesting…let’s just say that Tricky Pixie definitely lives up to its name here.

“Tough Titty Cupcakes” is every bit as amusing as the name suggests and “Ballad of the Boy Cat” — the last track, is a fitting wrap-up to this fine, fun collection of songs. Although there is a lot of play and silliness here, the music and vocals still manage to display talent and skill. What could be “gimmicky” is instead clever. That’s what happens when humor is used intelligently by those with skill. That is exactly what you get on “Mythcreants”. And the band shows it can do regular style tunes well too–don’t miss “Water’s in the Hold” – a groove that delivers.

I doubt very much you’ve heard anything quite like this before–I know I hadn’t!
